The Alaskan Malamute was originally bred in harsh Arctic conditions to pull heavy loads across long distances through severe winter weather, hence their distinguishing categorization as the "Heavy Freighters of The North".

The tough environment, in which they were bred to survive and thrive, dictates a dog that is strong, tough, energetic, independent and possessing great individual personality and intelligence.

While these traits are appealing to many people who would like to have a Malamute as a member of their family, the truth is that most, if not all, Malamutes are too much dog for most dog owners.

All of the intelligence, individuality, strength and energy must be directed at some occupation, and if it is not the job for which they were bred or if not actively directed by a knowledgeable owner, well, a Malamute WILL find something to occupy it's attention and burn-off that boundless energy...but not in ways you are likely to enjoy or appreciate
. One of the additional challenges a Malamute will present you with is winning top billing in the family as 'Alpha'...they see no reason to be 'second in command' if they can be 'Top Dog'!

To help you learn more about this high-maintenance breed, we have assembled some links to more information that you can look into before deciding if an Alaskan Malamute is the right breed of dog for you!
